What's new?
Would you be shocked if I said the wisest king, king Solomon, said there is nothing new under the sun? That what is now has already been, and that you can't point to anything and say it's new because it was already long ago. Isn't this very discouraging to inventors, designers, artists and people in all industries who are constantly trying to come up with something new and attractive?
Fortunately king Solomon was probably talking more about principles and truths of life rather than products and designs. In Ecclesiastes he was pointing out the seasons in one's life, like youth, adulthood and old age, that in human experiences there is nothing new. For someone falling in love for the first time it is new, but love itself is certainly the oldest truth in life.
So what does this mean for us starting off another new year? Do we go seek out some new fashion to wear, a new gadget to buy, or a new thrill to experience? Probably not if you follow king Solomon's thinking. It may be time to seek out the age-old wisdom for living, to find out what truths and principles we should live by. Look up the ancient truths of the Bible and start living meaningfully and purposefully for the rest of our short lives on earth.
However, I would like to announce some 'new' classes, or rather first time classes coming up:
An Ikebana class and a kimono class will start in April by two very experienced teachers. Details to be announced.
Also, our Chat Time is slightly changed to Chatterbox still held every fourth Saturday night from 7 to 9 p.m. Drinks and snacks will be provided. You may come for the whole two hours or part of the time, and talk freely with a native English speaker here. 100 yen per 10 minutes or 1,000 yen for the whole two hours.
